Giants president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, clarified the contract statuses for both himself and manager Bob Melvin beyond the 2025 MLB season. This followed a report by John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, which stated that their contracts are only guaranteed through 2025, not 2026 as previously believed.
During an interview on KNBR 680’s “Tolbert & Copes,” Zaidi explained the confusion, saying, “I didn’t read the full story, but both of our contracts include language about 2026. It’s just not fully guaranteed. Details like these aren’t always made public, especially when there are complex factors involved. For simplicity, we said the contracts ran through 2026, but it’s accurate that they’re not fully guaranteed.”
Zaidi emphasized that he and Melvin are working well together and are focused on finishing the season strong, adding that they’ve had discussions about personnel changes to improve the team. Despite a disappointing 2024 season, Zaidi noted some positive aspects to build on for next year.
Initially, Melvin was thought to have signed a three-year deal last offseason, while Zaidi’s extension was also believed to run through 2026. However, as the Chronicle reported, both contracts actually extend through 2025, with what amounts to team options for 2026.
Calls for leadership changes within the Giants organization have grown after another underwhelming season in 2024.
The future of Zaidi and Melvin with the Giants remains uncertain, but if the organization chooses to move on from either or both, they will still be financially obligated to them for at least one more season.
